First Fridays: The Night the Blues Took Over
There are nights at The Music Room where the music just hits different. Last Friday was one of those nights.
It started slow, the way the best jam sessions always do. Marta, one of our regulars, kicked things off with a stripped-back vocal rendition of “Stormy Monday” that had everyone in the room reaching for their drinks a little slower. She has this way of pulling you in, half-closing her eyes, letting the notes hang in the air before resolving them.
The Harmonica Moment
Then Jordi walked in. He had spent the morning at Encants flea market and came in carrying a battered harmonica case. “Found it between a box of old records and a typewriter,” he said. “Sounded too good to leave.” He was right. When he sat in on “The Thrill Is Gone,” that harmonica cut through the room like it had been waiting decades to be played again. Nico held it down on bass, laying out a groove so deep you could feel it in the floor.
When the Crowd Becomes the Band
By 11 PM the room was packed, maybe 40 people, which for our little space in Gracia feels like a stadium. Someone started clapping a shuffle rhythm during a 12-bar blues jam, and within a minute the whole room was in on it. That is the magic of these sessions: the line between audience and performer disappears completely.
A couple from Lyon who were visiting Barcelona for the weekend asked if they could sit in. She played slide guitar on a borrowed Telecaster; he sang in French over a slow blues in E. Nobody understood the words. Everyone understood the feeling.
Highlights of the Night
- “Stormy Monday” (T-Bone Walker), Marta on vocals, with Nico on upright bass. The room went silent.
- “The Thrill Is Gone” (B.B. King), Jordi on flea market harmonica. Standing ovation from the back tables.
- 12-bar blues jam in E, Started with three musicians, ended with seven. Peak Friday energy.
These First Friday sessions are open to everyone. Bring your instrument, bring your voice, or just bring yourself. We provide the backline, the PA, and the cold Estrella. The music provides the rest.
