Acoustic Sunday: Strings and Stories in Gracia

January in Barcelona can be grey and quiet. But inside The Music Room last Sunday, it was anything but.

We tried something different this month: an acoustic-only session. No amps, no PA, no mics. Just instruments, voices, and the natural reverb of our little room on Carrer Verdi.

Laia and the Song That Stopped the Room

Laia brought her Martin D-28 and opened with a fingerpicked original she had been working on for months. She called it “Carrer del Sol”, a love letter to the narrow streets of Gracia, set to a waltz in 3/4 time. The melody was simple but the lyrics had this weight to them that made everyone lean in. When she finished, there was that perfect two-second silence before the applause. You know the one.

Tomas kept the rhythm going all afternoon on his cajon, slotting in behind whoever was playing with the kind of instinct that only comes from years of listening. At one point the power flickered and went out entirely for about ten minutes. Nobody panicked. Tomas just kept the beat, someone lit candles from behind the bar, and the whole room sang through “Hallelujah” in the dark. It might have been the best version of that song anyone in the room had ever heard.

The New Faces

We had a father and daughter duo show up for the first time. He played mandolin, she played fiddle, and together they ripped through a set of Irish folk tunes that had half the room stomping their feet. They are from Galway originally, living in Sants now, and said they had been looking for somewhere to play since they moved.

Highlights

  • “Carrer del Sol” (original by Laia), Fingerpicked waltz in G. Beautiful and haunting.
  • “Hallelujah” (Leonard Cohen), Full room singalong during a power cut. Unforgettable.
  • Irish folk medley, Mandolin and fiddle. The Galway-Sants connection.

Acoustic Sundays happen on the last Sunday of each month. No signup, no pressure, just show up and play. Next one: February 23rd. Doors at 4 PM.
